Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to evaluate, implement and monitor high risk trade waste discharge approvals.It includes managing trade waste approvals from large and complex industrial organisations. It also includes adhering to legislation, regulations, industry standards and workplace procedures. This unit applies to those working as trade waste officers or inspectors with the responsibility for managing applications and approvals for high risk liquid trade waste discharges to wastewater collection systems. Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously while performing sophisticated tasks in a range of familiar contexts. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Advise customers on trade waste approval procedures
  • 1.1 Respond to customer queries regarding applications for high risk trade waste approvals
  • 1.2 Advise customers of the procedures involved in processing, approving and monitoring trade waste applications
  • 1.3 Obtain and analyse work health and safety (WHS), environmental and sustainable energy practices and procedures
2 Evaluate trade waste discharges for new industries
  • 2.1 Identify significant pollutants generated according to environmental legislation and workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Identify hazards, assess risks and implement control measures according to workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Identify and evaluate trade waste management processes and workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Develop and check contingency plans
  • 2.5 Prepare trade waste management policies and plans
3 Assess applications for high risk trade waste discharge approvals
  • 3.1 Receive all relevant documentation and assess customer applications
  • 3.2 Assess applications against concentration, mass and flow limits, discharges of prohibited substances and local sewerage issues according to environmental issues
  • 3.3 Assess proposed pre-treatment systems, monitoring, control systems and procedures for suitability
  • 3.4 Assess chemical storage, handling and spill prevention procedures and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and industry standards
  • 3.5 Schedule and conduct on-site inspections according to workplace procedures
4 Implement approved trade waste discharge applications
  • 4.1 Determine and assess approval conditions and discuss with customer
  • 4.2 Estimate cost calculations and discuss with customers according to current charging policies and formulae
  • 4.3 Monitor construction and commissioning activities to ensure compliance with approvals
  • 4.4 Determine monitoring activities and schedules and discuss with customer
  • 4.5 Create and maintain database records including charging parameters and monitoring schedule
5 Monitor and reviewtrade waste treatment and disposal approvals
  • 5.1 Monitor customer for compliance of trade waste treatment and discharge according to trade waste approvals and workplace requirements
  • 5.2 Establish processes to identify and report non-compliances with trade waste approvals to relevant stakeholders
