Description
This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise and apply the fundamental biological principles needed to assist with provision of information to patients in a hospital or health services pharmacy setting.This unit applies to hospital or health services pharmacy assistants and technicians working under the supervision of an authorised person.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Understand basic human biology.
- 1.1. Describe the basic functions of human biology, the functions of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, endocrine and genito-urinary, and lymphatic systems, and the sensory organs function.
- 1.2. Identify how carbohydrates, lipids and proteins affect the human body.
- 1.3. Identify the function of enzymes and nucleic acids and how they affect the human body.
- 1.4. Identify the classification of micro-organisms and the basic difference between them.
- 1.5. Determine the biological functions and effect of water on the human body.
2. Provide biological information to patients.
- 2.1. Determine the scope of the job role with regard to the provision of information to patients by checking with an authorised person.
- 2.2. Service patients and provide them with biological feedback that is within the scope of job role and is relevant to their medical condition.
3. Conduct follow-up to determine patients’ understanding.
- 3.1. Discuss relevant biological points further with patients to ensure they fully understand the relevance to their medical situation.
- 3.2. Inform patients of relevant medical or pharmaceutical follow-up requirements.
