Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assess conservation requirements for designed glass installations, including of lead light and stained, kiln-formed and laminated glass, by researching and applying recognised conservation principles and practices. It includes the ability to prepare comprehensive reports on assessment requirements, including estimates of the cost of recommended work.This unit applies to experienced glass industry workers working with designed glass who interpret and use advanced technical information to develop solutions to potentially complex designed glass requirements. They commonly work independently and typically solve complex problems that require theoretical knowledge and experience about the specification, manufacture and installation of a wide range of designed glass installations.At the time of this unit’s release, the work described in this unit does not require licensing or certification, but state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturers’ installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to assess conservation requirements
  • 1.1 Identify from relevant personnel and job instructions the assessment’s purpose and requirements
  • 1.2 Inspect the location of the designed glass installation and identify security, access, storage and other relevant arrangements
  • 1.3 Identify hazards relating to the location, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.4 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Identify suitable assessment procedures and techniques and obtain approval from relevant personnel to use them
  • 1.6 Gather plans, historical documents and industry standards for the installation
2. Assess conservation requirements
  • 2.1 Position plans and historical documents to allow for confirmation of the structure and placement of the designed glass installation
  • 2.2 Photograph the installation to create a photographic sequence documenting its condition and for later reference
  • 2.3 Identify and document the installation’s structural and other relevant features, faults and past treatments according to workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Assess and document the impacts on the installation of environmental factors according to workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Clean up the assessment area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 2.6 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
3. Prepare condition reports
  • 3.1 Determine required conservation work identified by the assessment with relevant personnel
  • 3.2 Prepare a condition report with photographic sequences, assessment evidence, analysis and recommended conservation work
  • 3.3 Identify and estimate materials, subcontracted services, direct and indirect costs, overheads and mark-ups according to workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Prepare and document a proposal for the recommended conservation work with the scope of work, estimates, relevant variation and other conditions and timeframes according to workplace procedures
