Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan for and safely cut vegetation using an industrial standard blade type brush cutter.The unit applies to individuals who are involved in brush cutting operations.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for brush cutting
  • 1.1 Determine job requirements from work order or instruction, and where required seek clarification from appropriate personnel
  • 1.2 Confirm safety and environmental requirements for the task according to workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Identify, assess and take actions to mitigate risks and hazards associated with brush cutting operations
  • 1.4 Identify emergency and evacuation procedures to follow in the event of an incident or accident
  • 1.5 Consult with appropriate personnel to ensure that work is coordinated effectively with others in the workplace
  • 1.6 Select tools, equipment, machinery and materials for brush cutting operations and check for serviceability according to workplace procedures
  • 1.7 Select, use and store personal protective equipment and clothing appropriate to work task
  • 1.8 Select appropriate cutting methods for identified types of vegetation and to optimise time and safety
2. Operate brush cutter
  • 2.1 Use equipment according to workplace safety procedures, manufacturer instructions and environmental protection practices
  • 2.2 Use hand signals with other operators to maintain effective and safe operations
  • 2.3 Adjust brush cutter safety harness and handles to correct ergonomic position
  • 2.4 Monitor brush cutter for operational effectiveness, and refuel as required
  • 2.5 Operate brush cutter appropriate to site conditions and at a safe distance from other people present
  • 2.6 Dispose of cut vegetation according to workplace and environmental protection practices
3. Complete operator maintenance
  • 3.1 Follow workplace safety procedures to lock out equipment
  • 3.2 Check brush cutter blades for bluntness or damage
  • 3.3 Remove and replace brush cutter blades and other operator-replaceable components in line with manufacturer recommendations
  • 3.4 Dispose of used blades according to workplace and environmental protection practices
  • 3.5 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel
