Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct primary screening of persons in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and national operating standards.It includes preparing primary screening equipment and environment, preparing persons for screening, screening persons and responding to weapons and prohibited items.This unit addresses technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to security duties of screening officers and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex transport security operational environments.Operations are conducted across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian transport security environment.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare primary screening equipment and environment
  • 1.1 Legislative requirements and workplace procedures for primary screening of persons are accessed and followed to ensure effective and efficient screening operations
  • 1.2 The screening area is organised, secure, and conducive to efficient screening operations in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Equipment functionality is verified, and malfunctions reported to relevant persons in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Prepare persons for screening
  • 2.1 Screening process is communicated clearly and effectively to individuals
  • 2.2 Instruct individuals with clear and courteous communications regarding the divestment of items to be screened separately to ensure compliance with screening processes
  • 2.3 Flow of people through the primary screening environment is managed to ensure effectiveness of the screening process in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Individuals with specific circumstances that require alternate screening procedures are identified and accommodated in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
3 Screen persons
  • 3.1 Screening equipment is operated to detect weapons and prohibited items on persons in accordance with manufacturer instructions, legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Alarm activations are recognised, assessed and responded to in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Alarm activations that cannot be cleared are referred to secondary screening in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Individuals with special circumstances who cannot undergo primary screening are screened using alternate methods in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.5 Individuals who are cleared during primary screening are permitted to continue into secure area
4 Respond to weapons and prohibited items
  • 4.1 Risks associated with weapons and prohibited items detected during primary screening are identified and assessed
  • 4.2 Workplace procedures for responding to identification of weapons and prohibited items are followed
  • 4.3 Security breaches during primary screening are immediately communicated with relevant persons
5 Refer people to secondary screening
  • 5.1 Individuals who are not cleared during primary screening are not permitted to enter the secure area and are referred to secondary screening
  • 5.2 The need for secondary screening is explained to individuals in a courteous manner
  • 5.3 Information regarding an alarm that cannot be cleared during the primary screening process is communicated clearly to the officer conducting secondary screening
