Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and prime a repaired body panel of a vehicle. It requires the learner to plan and prepare the task; identify types of automotive abrasives; remove protective waxes and surface contaminants; feather paint edges; apply filler; and maintain the work area, tools and equipment. This unit applies to those undertaking a Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) or pre-vocational qualification as preparation to entering the automotive service and repair or automotive manufacturing industry.The unit is designed for use in a highly supervised context.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to prime a repaired body panel
- 1.1 Source and interpret safety and environmental requirements
- 1.2 Interpret task instruction and identify vehicle body panel to be worked on
- 1.3 Source and interpret manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures for removing paint and preparing surface
- 1.4 Identify potential hazards and risks associated with task and report to workplace supervisor
- 1.5 Identify tools and equipment required for priming body panel according to manufacturer specifications
2. Prepare body panel for priming
- 2.1 Select and check tools, equipment and materials for priming body panel prior to use according to manufacturer specifications and safety requirements
- 2.2 Prepare vehicle body panel for priming according to workplace procedures and safety and environmental requirements, and without causing damage to components, tools or equipment
- 2.3 Inspect body panel according to manufacturer specifications
- 2.4 Record body panel inspection results
3. Apply primer to body panel
- 3.1 Prepare primer for application according to manufacturer specifications and safety and environmental requirements
- 3.2 Apply primer according to workplace procedures, manufacturer specifications, and safety and environmental requirements
- 3.3 Apply primer to body panel without causing damage to body panel, components, tools or equipment
- 3.4 Inspect body panel to ensure required application of primer to body panel
- 3.5 Record body panel inspection results
4. Complete work processes
- 4.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
- 4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
- 4.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
