Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to visually interpret image data to identify the basic features of the landscape, including land cover such as vegetation, roads, railways, buildings, bodies of water and terrain forms. Image data may be digital or in hard copy and may include aerial and terrestrial photographs and satellite images. This unit is suitable for surveying or spatial information services assistants working under supervision. They use cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply a range of methods, tools, materials and information to complete routine activities and provide solutions to predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, in accordance with relevant state/territory regulations that govern surveying work, as well as work health and safety (WHS) legislation and regulations that apply to the workplace.Cadastral surveying must be undertaken under the supervision of a registered surveyor. Users must check with the relevant regulatory state/territory authority before delivery. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1 Identify image and ancillary data.
  • 1.1 Confirm organisational requirements for accessing and formatting image data.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate software to assist visual interpretation.
  • 1.3 Clarify task and image data requirements to be accessed and interpreted.
  • 1.4 Identify and report constraints in using different types of image data.
  • 1.5 Determine suitability of images provided to meet task requirements.
  • 1.6 Select ancillary data that can be used to assist visual interpretation of image.
2 Identify basic landscape features.
  • 2.1 Use simple analogue and digital tools to assist with visual interpretation.
  • 2.2 Interpret image data using principles of interpretation and ancillary data to identify natural and artificial landscape features.
  • 2.3 Calculate scale and measure objects from an image and ancillary data.
3 Document basic landscape features.
  • 3.1 Record details of image features using standard proformas and according to task and organisational requirements.
  • 3.2 Present interpreted results to appropriate persons.
  • 3.3 Store data according to data privacy, licensing and organisational requirements.
