Description
This unit describes the skills required to establish the connection conditions of new water, waste water and recycled water conditions by assessing the hydraulics and infrastructure capacity.This unit applies to those working as trade waste officers within the water industry with a specific responsibility for managing applications and approvals for connection requests. The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to. Those undertaking this unit would work independently as part of a team making independent decisions while performing sophisticated tasks in a range of familiar contexts. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for establishing connections
  • 1.1 Respond to customer enquiries regarding applications for new connections.
  • 1.2 Advise customer of the procedures involved in processing and approving and monitoring applications.
2. Evaluate connection application
  • 2.1 Identify and confirm the location and nature of the work to be assessed from the job specifications.
  • 2.2 Review the property conditions and assess the issues that affect connection.
  • 2.3 Prioritise work load to ensure compliance with KPI requirements.
  • 2.4 Notify the relevant organisations and individuals who will be affected by the work.
3. Assess the infrastructure capacity
  • 3.1 Assess local infrastructure with the use of relevant database systems.
  • 3.2 Assess utilities assets to determine suitability for connection.
  • 3.3 Determine the impacts on the infrastructure.
  • 3.4 Apply connection requirements.
4. Conduct hydraulic assessment
  • 4.1 Review connection attributes.
  • 4.2 Apply delegations and approvals controls.
  • 4.3 Conduct community and stakeholder consultation.
  • 4.4 Determine the connection conditions.
5. Maintain connection records
  • 5.1 Compile assessment findings into information systems.
  • 5.2 Prepare and store business and customer documentation in information systems for access and review.
  • 5.3 Complete customer requests and generate compliance data.
