Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct motor vehicle searches before accessing secure areas, in compliance with relevant legislative requirements and national operating standards.It includes planning and preparing for vehicle search; implementing a search; recognising and acting on abnormal situations; and completing post search activities.This unit addresses technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to security duties of screening officers and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex transport security operational environments.Operations are conducted across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian transport security environment.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for motor vehicle search
  • 1.1 Hazard identification and risk assessment strategies are developed and implemented to ensure search is conducted safely in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Authority to search is verified, obtained and intention to search is advised to relevant people in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
2 Undertake motor vehicle search
  • 2.1 Conduct search of vehicle systematically in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Relevant equipment and associated technology is utilised effectively in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Documentation and search records are updated in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
3 Respond to detection of prohibited or unauthorised items
  • 3.1 Prohibited and unauthorised items are identified and assessed, and response is prioritised in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Implications of the prohibited and unauthorised items are evaluated in accordance with work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) processes and workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Prohibited and unauthorised items are managed within limit of own authority and duty of care in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Relevant regulatory authorities are notified of result in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
