Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out euthanasia or destruction of crocodiles in a humane way that complies with safe operating practices and with ethical, welfare and legislative requirements.The unit applies to individuals who are required to euthanise sick crocodiles, or to individuals who have permission from the appropriate authority to destroy crocodiles for population management or for human safety following an incident or a potentially dangerous situation. Individuals are required to exhibit appropriate care for crocodiles so that stress and discomfort are minimised. All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. Licensing permits from the appropriate states or territories apply to this unit. Licences or permits may be required for the use of firearms or restricted drugs on crocodiles or if operating vehicles.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to euthanise or destroy crocodile
- 1.1 Establish the reason for the euthanasia or destruction of a crocodile and conduct a welfare assessment
- 1.2 Identify crocodile to be euthanised or destroyed, and confirm requirements with relevant parties
- 1.3 Prepare equipment required according to workplace requirements
- 1.4 Determine human assistance required for the procedure and make necessary arrangements
- 1.5 Identify hazards, injury risk, workplace health and safety issues and biosecurity risks associated with the procedure
- 1.6 Gather required equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE) to prepare for the euthanasia or destruction of a crocodile
2. Carry out humane euthanasia or destruction of a crocodile
- 2.1 Ensure crocodile is physically restrained in a way that minimises its pain and distress
- 2.2 Euthanise or destroy a crocodile in a manner that is appropriate to the crocodile's size and according to health and safety, biosecurity and regulatory or code of practice requirements
- 2.3 Monitor procedure to ensure that the crocodile's death is rapid and without complications or undue suffering
- 2.4 Confirm death of crocodile according to standard operating procedures (SOPs)
3. Conduct crocodile post-euthanasia or destruction tasks
- 3.1 Handle and move carcass if required for research or post-mortem examination according to workplace requirements
- 3.2 Dispose of crocodile carcass and biological waste according to workplace policies and biosecurity regulations
- 3.3 Dispose or decontaminate, and clean and store equipment and materials according to SOPs
- 3.4 Debrief process with relevant personnel
- 3.5 Record action taken according to SOPs
