Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely manoeuvre and tow a recreational vehicle along public and private roads.The unit applies to a person working in a recreational vehicle manufacturing or service and repair facility who undertakes routine tasks according to job instructions, plans/specifications and procedures and uses discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services and contingency measures. They work with a high degree of self-direction and limited supervision. They apply known solutions to routine problems and report non-routine problems according to procedures. They are responsible for their output and have limited responsibility for the output of others.This unit assumes the driver has a current Australian driver licence. Drivers must comply with the licence requirements and regulations of the relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority. The type of vehicle the person drives must be allowed under their driver licence.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Assess recreational vehicles’ safe towing weights
  • 1.1 Determine the gross weight of the recreational vehicle and determine its aggregate mass
  • 1.2 Check the towing capacity of the towing vehicle
  • 1.3 Check and adhere to the tow-bar capacity of the towing vehicle
  • 1.4 Confirm the weight ratio of the recreational and towing vehicle is safe according to state/territory requirements and regulations
2. Prepare to tow recreational vehicles
  • 2.1 Identify towing requirements from job instructions
  • 2.2 Conduct pre-operational checks of the towing and recreational vehicles and record their conditions according to workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Rectify any identified minor deficiencies and report complex deficiencies to the workplace supervisor and confirm the next steps according to workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Attach the recreational vehicle to the towing vehicle according to the manufacturer’s specifications
  • 2.5 Adjust and correctly position mirrors to optimise visibility
  • 2.6 Identify hazards within the workplace and on the open road, including risks of injury to people or damage to property, equipment, loads and facilities
  • 2.7 Identify hazard controls, and check they are in place and operating
3. Tow recreational vehicles in the workplace and on the open road
  • 3.1 Manoeuvre the recreational vehicle in the forward and reverse directions, maintaining control of the direction of its movement
  • 3.2 Reverse recreational vehicle to the parking position, maintaining visibility and achieving accurate positioning
  • 3.3 Plan a route to the destination that accounts for obstacles and hazards and maximises safety and timeliness
  • 3.4 Tow the recreational vehicle to the destination, showing courtesy and consideration to other road users and using driving techniques to minimise hazards
  • 3.5 On arrival, identify the delineated parking position and identify hazards and hazard controls and check the hazard controls are in place and operating
  • 3.6 Park the recreational vehicle, maintaining visibility and achieving accurate positioning
  • 3.7 Inspect the recreational and towing vehicles inside and out and confirm their conditions are consistent with their pre-towing conditions, and rectify any deficiencies
