Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support drilling processes in the resources and infrastructure industries. It prepares individuals to operate ancillary equipment, clean equipment at the drilling site, maintain supply levels, perform and report basic measurements and carry out basic operator maintenance.It applies to those working in assistant driller or drilling roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to support the drilling process
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to support drilling processes and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
- 1.6 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received as required
2. Prepare, operate and dismantle ancillary equipment
- 2.1 Set up and ancillary equipment according to operational requirements
- 2.2 Carry out services connections to and from equipment
- 2.3 Carry out required prestart and start-up checks on ancillary equipment
- 2.4 Run and monitor ancillary equipment
- 2.5 Dismantle ancillary equipment according to operational requirements
3. Clean all equipment at drilling site
- 3.1 Maintain clean working conditions according to workplace procedures and safety requirements
- 3.2 Clean and store vehicles routinely after use according to operational and safety requirements
- 3.3 Clean machines and equipment to schedule according to safety requirements
- 3.4 Confirm all cleaning equipment is kept in good working condition
4. Maintain levels of supplies
- 4.1 Check and communicate current stock levels to driller
- 4.2 Check on availability of consumable items in the workplace
- 4.3 Complete written record and stocktake counts
5. Perform and report on basic measurement and calculations
- 5.1 Carry out simple calculations and measurements according to operational requirements
- 5.2 Record data on reports according to operational requirements and workplace procedures
6. Carry out basic operator maintenance
- 6.1 Identify hazards and methods of minimising hazards when conducting maintenance in the field
- 6.2 Carry out minor repairs and replacements as required
- 6.3 Maintain and service machines and equipment to schedule
- 6.4 Overcome minor breakdowns and bogging using recovery techniques as required
- 6.5 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
