Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and evaluate vehicle body repair materials, equipment and work processes, and to select those most appropriate for establishing a new body repair facility or updating an existing business. This unit requires knowledge of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) repair requirements and evolving industry technologies.The unit applies to those working in the automotive body repair industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine process requirements
- 1.1 Identify requirements for body repair facility
- 1.2 Develop framework and rating system to facilitate comparisons of materials, equipment and processes
- 1.3 Identify and assess OEM repair requirements to establish comparisons and benchmarks to be used
2. Identify specifications for required body repair materials, equipment and work processes
- 2.1 Identify repair steps and work processes and produce flow charts
- 2.2 Identify material and equipment specifications to match repair processes
- 2.3 Consult staff and management to identify additional or altered requirements
- 2.4 Identify materials, tooling and equipment requirements for body work undertaken in facility and document specifications
- 2.5 Identify work health and safety (WHS) requirements for safe facility and work practices
- 2.6 Compile and document required specification data
3. Evaluate materials, equipment and work processes against facility requirements
- 3.1 Identify and document material options against required quality, finish and conformity to OEM specifications and repair standards
- 3.2 Identify and document equipment options
- 3.3 Select materials and equipment based on facility work processes and comparisons of performance, cost and specifications compared to established rating system
- 3.4 Document outcomes and prepare report
