This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate essential ancillary equipment that supports production operations, and is operated separately from the main production equipment. This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a teamThe unit principally refers to essential ancillary units required to support the main operational functions, but often have a need for specialised skills and knowledge to ensure overall efficiency and reliability.No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Check work requirements
  • 1.1 Identify equipment requirements from job specifications
  • 1.2 Perform housekeeping tasks to prepare for work to be undertaken
  • 1.3 Perform pre-operational checks including checking for and acting on hazards
2. Start up and shutdown equipment
  • 2.1 Conduct pre-startup checks according to equipment specifications and procedures
  • 2.2 Start up and shutdown each machine safely according to equipment instructions
3. Operate ancillary equipment
  • 3.1 Check process is operating according to equipment specifications and work requirements
  • 3.2 Accurately complete logs and records
  • 3.3 Pause or shut down units of equipment in normal and abnormal circumstances and make ready for next operation
  • 3.4 Clean equipment and work area according to equipment specifications and workplace procedures
4. Respond to process control variances
  • 4.1 Recognise and log process control variances and their causes
  • 4.2 Determine, prioritise and implement remedial and preventative actions based on identified issues and causes
  • 4.3 Accurately maintain records and logbooks
