Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop basic acting skills for performances in commercial, community or open space settings by singers, dancers, actors, comedians and other performers.The unit applies to those who use basic acting techniques when performing solo or as members of an ensemble in live performance work environments, including in musical theatre, acting and community performer roles. At this level, work is normally supervised, though some autonomy and judgement can be expected in live performance situations. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for acting practice and performances
  • 1.1 Determine audience, role, purpose and performance space layout for performance activity
  • 1.2 Perform warm-up and warm-down activities required for performance activity
  • 1.3 Discuss creative and technical parameters of role and performance activity with required personnel
  • 1.4 Identify and use suitable make-up, hairstyle, costuming and props as required for performance
2. Practise basic acting techniques
  • 2.1 Determine character to be performed and build character using basic acting skills
  • 2.2 Apply and practise memorisation skills for retaining lines of dialogue
  • 2.3 Convey role and character through creative use of voice and body in a dramatic context
  • 2.4 Perform dialogue with clarity, accuracy and control using a range of basic vocal and movement techniques
3. Rehearse and perform acting techniques
  • 3.1 Rehearse and act in an improvised performance with others
  • 3.2 Take and interpret direction from others
  • 3.3 Contribute creatively to group work
  • 3.4 Note different functions and roles of theatre personnel in dealings with others
4. Evaluate own basic acting skills
  • 4.1 Take and interpret direction to improve own acting practice and performance
  • 4.2 Use feedback from others to identify and develop ways to improve own basic acting skills
