Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop designs and produce knitted textile products to meet a specified design brief. It applies to knitted products such as garments, furnishing items, accessories or fabrics. Note that this unit does not address fully fashioned knitted products.This unit applies to textile designers.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop design for knitted textile products
  • 1.1 Identify design parameters from brief
  • 1.2 Develop design concept and colour palette that responds to the brief
  • 1.3 Select and use communication tools to present knit design
  • 1.4 Collaborate with other members of the design and development team and exchange ideas about potential concepts and modifications
  • 1.5 Create pattern for knitted product that meets design requirements
2. Produce knitted products
  • 2.1 Plan production sequence to meet design requirements
  • 2.2 Source and prepare materials and equipment required for production
  • 2.3 Check yarns to be knitted against quality standards
  • 2.4 Use knitting techniques to create samples that meet design specifications and quality standards
  • 2.5 Refine and/or modify design and production details based on evaluation of samples produced
  • 2.6 Produce final produce and confirm that it meets quality standards
3. Evaluate design and production processes
  • 3.1 Assess final products against design brief and technical specifications
  • 3.2 Identify opportunities for improvement in design and production processes
  • 3.3 Document process and improvements for inclusion in future work
