Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out manual excavation in civil construction, including confirming the location of underground services, manually excavating, placing barricades and isolating the excavation. It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for manual excavation
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to carry out manual excavation
- 1.3 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Confirm and identify requirements for complying with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
- 1.6 Identify, address and report environmental issues, potential hazards and risks
- 1.7 Select plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
- 1.8 Identify, confirm, and locate materials required for work application
2. Initiate manual excavation procedures
- 2.1 Confirm location and specifications of intended excavation
- 2.2 Identify service markers and taped areas
- 2.3 Determine and confirm location of underground services and avoid damage and interference
- 2.4 Use hand tools and dig post holes, small pits and trenches to required dimensions
- 2.5 Undertake trench collapse prevention procedures where excavation is in unstable ground
- 2.6 Place barricades around the excavation according to job requirements
3. Complete and isolate the excavation
- 3.1 Clean loose material out of excavation using hand tools
- 3.2 Confirm excavation complies with specification and job requirements
- 3.3 Clear loose material away from edge of excavation
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 4.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
- 4.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, confirm suitability for use, and address and report issues as required within scope of own role
- 4.3 Manage and report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
- 4.4 Process records according to site requirements
