Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply complex textile printing techniques and processes when interpreting and responding to a specified design brief for products such as garments, fabrics, accessories, giftware or other domestic products. Complex techniques and processes are those which relate to issues such as layering, use of multiple screens, repeat printing and working back into the print with stitching, beading or use fabric manipulation.This unit applies to textile designers.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop print design
- 1.1 Identify design parameters from brief
- 1.2 Select dyes or pigments, colours and fabric substrates to meet design brief
- 1.3 Conduct research and experimentation to generate and explore design ideas that respond to the brief and the destination for the print
- 1.4 Select and use design communication tools to present design concept
- 1.5 Collaborate with other members of the design and development team and exchange ideas about potential concepts and modifications
2. Prepare for print production
- 2.1 Source and prepare materials and equipment required for production
- 2.2 Identify and document technical aspects of production
- 2.3 Select artwork or develop for screen printing applications on textiles
- 2.4 Select and prepare fabrics, colour separations and stencils
3. Produce printed products
- 3.1 Create samples to test accuracy of colour separations, repeat pattern colour, placement and registration
- 3.2 Analyse and evaluate samples and modify technical or design elements to meet design specifications
- 3.3 Use tools and equipment in accordance with their intended purpose
- 3.4 Monitor printing process and identify and resolve problems or faults
- 3.5 Document processes and effects to ensure exact outcomes can be replicated
