Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist people with orthopaedic conditions to regain optimal function and lifestyle.Enrolled nurses providing orthopaedic nursing care hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice, and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Provide orthopaedic nursing care.
  • 1.1. Analyse and problem solve to propose actions and implement nursing interventions.
  • 1.2. Undertake comprehensive nursing assessment to develop, prioritise and implement nursing plan of care.
  • 1.3. Provide, evaluate and document nursing care interventions of orthopaedic condition.
  • 1.4. Identify where patient acuity exceeds own knowledge, skill and assessed competence and consult with registered nurse and multidisciplinary health care team.
2. Clarify impact of orthopaedic condition.
  • 2.1. Revise current practices and how they apply to orthopaedic conditions and associated pathophysiology as they apply to each clinical manifestation.
  • 2.2. Identify psychosocial impact and potential complications and clarify assessed nursing care needs.
  • 2.3. Evaluate impacts and complications of orthopaedic condition.
  • 2.4. Contribute to long-term management and planning of recovery phase of care.
3. Promote improvement and advancement of orthopaedic nursing.
  • 3.1. Monitor and evaluate nursing care provided as part of the continuous improvement process.
  • 3.2. Evaluate nursing interventions provided and identify outcomes against evidence-based best practice in orthopaedic nursing.
  • 3.3. Seek opportunities and participate in professional development to guide own practice and act as a resource for colleagues.
