Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct self-propelled aggregate spreader operations in civil construction. It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for self-propelled aggregate spreader operations
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply self-propelled aggregate spreader operations documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.5 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks and check for faults within scope of own role
- 1.6 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
- 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fires, accidents and other emergencies
2. Operate aggregate spreader
- 2.1 Carry out prestart and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures
- 2.2 Record aggregate stone size and set up equipment accordingly
- 2.3 Drive and operate equipment while monitoring gauges and systems according to job requirements and workplace procedures
- 2.4 Guide truck to spreader and engage securely prior to taking on load
- 2.5 Check calibration and adjust machine as required
- 2.6 Select, monitor and modify spreading technique and speed as required by work conditions
- 2.7 Identify and manage hazards and maintain a safe working environment
3. Perform hand spreading and spotting duties
- 3.1 Check uniformity of run and correct according to job requirements
- 3.2 Hand spread materials to specifications
4. Carry out operator maintenance
- 4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
- 4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
- 4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to workplace procedures
- 4.4 Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
5. Relocate aggregate spreader
- 5.1 Prepare aggregate spreader for relocation
- 5.2 Drive aggregate spreader safely on highways and construction sites, observing highway code and local safety requirements
6. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 6.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
- 6.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
- 6.3 Complete, file and distribute documentation as required in a manner that complies with workplace practices
