Description
This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise the main medications and their actions in the treatment of malignant disease and immunosuppressive disorders so as to dispense medication to patients who suffer from these disorders.This unit applies to hospital or health services pharmacy assistants and technicians working under the supervision of an authorised person.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify medication to treat malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders.
- 1.1. Identify the malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders being treated.
- 1.2. Identify the factors that lead to the successful medicinal treatment of malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders.
- 1.3. Consult authorised personnel to verify the successful medicinal treatment of malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders.
2. Prepare appropriate medication to treat malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders to dispense to patients.
- 2.1. Identify the appropriate malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders medication to be dispensed to patients in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, guidelines and symbols.
- 2.2. Confirm the medication to be dispensed to the patient with an authorised person and prepare as directed.
3. Prepare to provide a continuing medication education session for peers.
- 3.1. Obtain and read presentation materials for continuing medication education session.
- 3.2. Chose a delivery method for the continuing medication education session.
- 3.3. Make arrangements, including time, venue and logistical issues for the delivery of the continuing medication education session.
4. Deliver the continuing medication education session for peers.
- 4.1. Describe malignant diseases, immunodeficiency and musculoskeletal disorders and associated symptoms for each disorder.
- 4.2. Explain common supportive care treatments as approved by an authorised person.
- 4.3. Explain the main effects of common medicines used for each of the disorders.
- 4.4. Refer to appropriate references to identify the requirements relating to the findings.
- 4.5. Use patient case studies to demonstrate treatment types, duration, side effects and further treatment.
- 4.6. Present the standard medication references and your organisation's prescribed policies.
