Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install synthetic turf and needle-punch floor coverings in indoor and outdoor facilities, including the preparation, cutting, laying out, joining, fixing and finishing of the synthetic textile floor covering material. Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit requires a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install synthetic textile floor coverings
- 1.1 Interpret floor covering installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Gather the floor coverings and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions
- 1.5 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the synthetic floor covering material, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
2. Cut, fit and fasten synthetic textile floor coverings
- 2.1 Cut and lay required shock padding/underlay for the floor covering according to job instructions, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
- 2.2 Determine the set out and laying direction of the floor covering according to job instructions to minimise waste and joins, consider the direction of the pile and ensure an efficient, quality installation
- 2.3 Establish the skirting point and seam placements for the floor covering
- 2.4 Lay out the synthetic floor covering material and check it for size, direction of pile and pattern match
- 2.5 Measure, mark, cut, seal and join the synthetic floor covering material according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
- 2.6 Position, stretch and fasten the synthetic floor covering according to workplace procedures
- 2.7 Fit the synthetic floor covering material to finishing strips, trim excess material to walls and finish installing the material according to workplace procedures
- 2.8 Check the synthetic floor covering material is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
- 2.9 Check the floor covering is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 3.3 Check, clean and perform routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
