Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct road pavement construction in civil construction, including setting out base and subbase and placing, spreading and compacting materials.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of tasks in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare work to conduct road pavement construction
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to conduct road pavement construction and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage and barrier requirements
- 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
- 1.7 Survey work area for ease of access and safe movement of materials
2. Set out sub-base and base
- 2.1 Set out job to plan from survey controls
- 2.2 Establish offset pegs and profiles to specified line and level according to job requirements
3. Place and spread materials
- 3.1 Determine layer depth for spreading materials according to job requirements and inform plant operators
- 3.2 Direct trucks to specified location and specify the method of dispatching for load placement according to job requirements
- 3.3 Check moisture content of materials and adjust uniformly
- 3.4 Assess road pavement laying and confirm heights and overall dimensions are achieved as specified according to job requirements
4. Compact materials
- 4.1 Inform roller operators of specified number of passes according to job requirements
- 4.2 Assess compaction process and confirm specified number of passes are made and compaction is uniform across the pavement
- 4.3 Check pavement trimming and confirm specified tolerances are achieved according to job requirements
5. Conduct clean-up activities
- 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
- 5.2 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
