Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to load aggregate using a purpose built loader in civil construction. It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to load aggregate using a purpose built loader
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply aggregate loading documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks, check for faults, and report or rectify in scope of own role
  • 1.6 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Prepare loader for operation
  • 2.1 Conduct pre-operational checks according to workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Check type and quantity of pre-coat in tank and adjust to required level
  • 2.3 Check pre-coating requirements and select correct loader size
  • 2.4 Record material quantities and screen sizes
  • 2.5 Select screens required for aggregate size
3. Manage stack site
  • 3.1 Identify and record aggregate sizes
  • 3.2 Check ground conditions at stack site and minimise contamination risk
  • 3.3 Estimate and record quantities in aggregate stockpiles
  • 3.4 Identify suitable parking availability and reserve for trucks while waiting and loading
  • 3.5 Keep stack site free from contamination by pre-coat material
4. Load/screen/pre-coat aggregate
  • 4.1 Direct trucks into position that minimises dust to workers and contamination of aggregates in windy conditions
  • 4.2 Drive and operate equipment according to task requirements
  • 4.3 Load required aggregate quantities into trucks without contamination
  • 4.4 Apply pre-coating uniformly to aggregate at specified rate
  • 4.5 Load aggregate quantities accurately and complete records
5. Clean up
  • 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
  • 5.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
  • 5.3 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
