Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform advanced draping for innovative or structured garments such as evening wear, bridal, occasion wear and tailored garments. Draping may be for a one-off garment that goes from drape to garment, or a prototype that goes from drape to flat pattern for small volume production. Draping is performed on a body form, such as a mannequin or model.This unit applies to individuals working in design and production roles.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for draping
  • 1.1 Select and prepare draping tools and equipment based on design specifications
  • 1.2 Prepare mannequin or model by applying required padding
  • 1.3 Mark body reference points with tape in correct positions on body form
  • 1.4 Plot design lines from working drawings onto body form, using narrow tape
  • 1.5 Develop working drawings and check measurements for accuracy
2. Plan drape
  • 2.1 Prepare fabric for draping according to fabric characteristics and garment design
  • 2.2 Identify requirements for adding ease and for manipulating dart excess
  • 2.3 Plan seam position and develop drape plan based on design requirements
3. Complete drape
  • 3.1 Pin fabric on body form, relating reference points and fabric grains
  • 3.2 Perform sequential advanced draping operations to achieve required outcomes
  • 3.3 Remove drape from model
  • 3.4 Finalise drape and direct to next production process
