Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply paint to vehicle body panels. This unit involves planning and preparing for the task, selecting paint from a colour code, tinting and mixing paint, applying paint to a panel using a spray gun, drying the panel, and maintaining the work area, tools and equipment.This unit applies to those undertaking a Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) or pre-vocational qualification as preparation to entering the automotive service and repair or automotive manufacturing industry. The unit is designed for use in a highly supervised context.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
- 1.1 Interpret task instructions and identify vehicle body panel to be worked on
- 1.2 Interpret vehicle colour codes and determine paint type, colour, quality and quantity
- 1.3 Source and interpret manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures for painting body panel
- 1.4 Source and interpret safety and environmental requirements
- 1.5 Spray gun and air line equipment, and identify and check paint mixing and tinting equipment for serviceability
- 1.6 Identify potential hazards and risks associated with task and report to workplace supervisor
2. Tint and mix paint
- 2.1 Calculate paint colour tint requirements to achieve vehicle colour code
- 2.2 Mix paint according to manufacturer specifications, workplace procedures, and safety and environmental requirements
- 2.3 Record paint colour and mixing requirements
3. Apply top coat
- 3.1 Apply paint using manufacturer recommended method and intervals according to safety and environmental requirements
- 3.2 Dry paint using approved methods and equipment
- 3.3 Inspect body panel to ensure painted surface meets requirements for colour and finish
4. Complete work processes
- 4.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
- 4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
- 4.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
