Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out basic repairs to vehicle plastic components. This unit involves planning and preparing for the task, identifying types of automotive plastic components, selecting and using tools and equipment, welding plastic components, and maintaining the work area, tools and equipment.The unit applies to those undertaking a Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) or pre-vocational qualification as preparation to entering the automotive service and repair or automotive manufacturing industry. The unit is designed for use in a highly supervised context.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to repair plastic component
- 1.1 Interpret task instructions and identify plastic component to be worked on
- 1.2 Source and interpret manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures for repairing component
- 1.3 Source and interpret safety and environmental requirements
- 1.4 Identify and report potential hazards and risks associated with task to workplace supervisor
- 1.5 Identify tools and equipment required for repairing component and check for serviceability
2. Repair plastic component
- 2.1 Select and use required plastic welding techniques and adhesives to repair component according to workplace requirements and procedures, and safety and environmental requirements
- 2.2 Select and apply body filler to the component according to workplace requirements, and safety and environmental requirements
- 2.3 Complete repairs to pre-paint condition according to workplace requirements and procedures, and safety and environmental requirements
- 2.4 Inspect repaired component according to workplace requirements
- 2.5 Record component inspection results
3. Complete work processes
- 3.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
- 3.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
- 3.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
