Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop patterns from existing blocks for the production of garments with advanced styling requirements such as structured tailoring, evening wear, bridal wear, corsetry, complex or experimental drape, complex patternmaking or significant detailing.This unit applies to patternmakers who work in accordance with existing specifications using discretion, judgement and problem solving to achieve work outcomes.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine pattern requirements
  • 1.1 Identify job requirements from design specifications and drawings
  • 1.2 Select and prepare required patternmaking tools, equipment and materials
  • 1.3 Liaise with stakeholders to confirm garment details, design features, fabric selection, intended purpose and target market.
  • 1.4 Evaluate information and record all design and advanced styling requirements
2. Create pattern
  • 2.1 Select appropriate block construction methods and techniques to create block for complex garments with advanced styling
  • 2.2 Select required blocks and check they are accurate and appropriate
  • 2.3 Make necessary adjustments to create pattern that matches design brief
  • 2.4 Document methods and formulas used
  • 2.5 Check pattern pieces, label and complete markings
3. Check and finalise patterns
  • 3.1 Test toile or garment segments for proportioning and fit
  • 3.2 Complete any pattern alterations and assess pattern meets fit and design requirements in consultation with stakeholders
  • 3.3 Finalise pattern and check it is accurate, complete and complies with design specifications
  • 3.4 Complete pattern specification, attach to patterns for storage and file appropriately
