Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required for the scheduling, implementation and reporting of dam safety surveillance.Surveillance of dams is undertaken to ensure they are operating safely. Reports on dam safety are also required to meet the power generation facility's legislative requirements. Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan work, implement dam safety surveillance and complete safety surveillance reports. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator, in a power generation facility.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for dam surveillance
- 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, environmental requirements and workplace procedures are identified, applied and monitored
- 1.2 Resources are identified and obtained in accordance with workplace procedures
- 1.3 Work requirements are identified from relevant personnel and documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
- 1.4 Monitoring frequency and sites for dam surveillance are determined in accordance with workplace procedures
- 1.5 Instrument requirements and data collection methods are identified in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Conduct dam safety surveillance
- 2.1 Dam safety surveillance processes and procedures are implemented in accordance with workplace procedures
- 2.2 Data from instruments and personnel is collected and processed in accordance with workplace procedures
- 2.3 Test and measurement instruments are used in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and specifications, and workplace procedures
- 2.4 Abnormal conditions and defects are identified and reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Complete safety surveillance reports
- 3.1 Calibration of instruments is checked after use in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and specifications, and workplace procedures
- 3.2 Dam surveillance reporting and documentation is undertaken in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
