Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to devise camera coverage for scenes in relatively large-scale screen productions such as feature films or television dramas. It involves considering different ideas when interpreting briefs, planning camera coverage for productions, developing and finalising camera plans according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who are responsible for establishing the big picture view of productions and creating a sense of overall unity within productions. They apply high-level creative visual storytelling skills to the interpretation of scripts or shot plans as the basis for devising camera coverage. They work closely with other creative and production personnel to reach agreement on final camera plans.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Interpret creative briefs and generate ideas
- 1.1 Analyse scripts and related documentation, and confirm production requirements in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Identify factors that may determine and affect development of camera plans
- 1.3 Generate different preliminary ideas for camera coverage and provide creative solutions that meet production requirements
- 1.4 Discuss and refine ideas with production personnel according to production requirements
2. Identify camera coverage requirements
- 2.1 Review reference material that could assist camera coverage decisions
- 2.2 Identify basic structural camera shots for realising scenes and investigate potential for achieving narrative outcomes
- 2.3 Confirm camera coverage is appropriate to contextual and stylistic requirements
- 2.4 Evaluate viability of proposed camera coverage concepts in collaboration with required personnel
- 2.5 Prepare and distribute documentation for proposed camera coverage to required personnel
3. Develop draft camera plans
- 3.1 Develop camera coverage that addresses visual and narrative aspects of production
- 3.2 Confirm camera coverage allows narrative to be controlled and carried forward throughout production
- 3.3 Organise testing of draft camera plans and confirm photographic outcomes can be achieved
- 3.4 Complete camera plan associated documentation within agreed timeframes and according to organisational procedures
4. Finalise camera plans
- 4.1 Present draft camera plans and specifications to required personnel in chosen format
- 4.2 Negotiate modifications to creative and technical criteria, and amend camera plans as required
- 4.3 Agree final plans and produce accurate and comprehensive documentation according to organisational procedures
- 4.4 Present final plans and specifications to required personnel and confirm production requirements are met
