This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to adapt massage assessment and treatment strategies to respond to clients with specific needs.This unit applies to massage therapists.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certificate or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Adapt assessment and treatment strategies to specific client needs.
  • 1.1. Use observation and discussion with client to identify specific client needs.
  • 1.2. Adapt massage assessment to meet specific client needs.
  • 1.3. Discuss treatment strategies with client.
  • 1.4. Tailor massage treatment to meet specific client needs.
  • 1.5. Consult with client and others where relevant to obtain consent in accordance with legal and ethical considerations.
2. Respond to unfamiliar client needs.
  • 2.1. Recognise where client’s specific needs fall outside current knowledge base and expertise.
  • 2.2. Refer client to other practitioners when client needs are beyond scope of own practice.
  • 2.3. Research and interpret credible sources of information to support client with specific needs.
