Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge to provide care for paediatric persons in primary health care, hospitals, hospices, home and community care, and long-term care facilities.Nurses working in the paediatric nursing environment hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice, and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Apply theoretical concepts, principles and nursing interventions in providing paediatric nursing care.
  • 1.1 Identify health status, limitations and therapeutic nursing plan of care to provide care for the paediatric person in the paediatric environment.
  • 1.2 Identify factors affecting health status and report significant alterations to registered nurse.
  • 1.3 Identify and respond to psychosocial and physiological needs in a paediatric care environment.
  • 1.4 Identify and apply systematic approach to paediatric nursing care.
2. Contribute to nursing care of the paediatric.
  • 2.1 Identify and apply specialist paediatric nursing care.
  • 2.2 Identify factors relevant to the physical, psychosocial, social, sexual, emotional and cognitive development in the continuity of nursing care planning.
  • 2.3 Review and analyse clinical data in accordance with developed plan of care and communicate findings to the registered nurse and multidisciplinary health care team.
  • 2.4 Work with multidisciplinary health care team to confirm care preferences and developmental needs.
3. Develop own practice in the paediatric care environment to perform nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore optimal health.
  • 3.1 Communicate appropriately according to the developmental stage of the paediatric person during assessment and collection of health information.
  • 3.2 Identify quality and safety issues in paediatric care.
  • 3.3 Identify actual and potential risks when providing paediatric care and participate in identifying organisational risk assessment and management processes.
  • 3.4 Prioritise and provide nursing care according to the assessed care and developmental needs and re-prioritise planned care activities where the condition changes.
  • 3.5 Identify where the acuity and assessed care needs exceeds level of knowledge, skill and competence and refer to registered nurse.
  • 3.6 Support the paediatric person, families and carers using developmental care, atraumatic care and family-centred care principles.
