Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify the principle characteristics of Auslan signs. It requires the ability to identify the parameters of Auslan signs, use of space, verbs, depicting signs and how new signs are added to Auslan.This knowledge of the phonology and morphology of Auslan underpins competence in the use of AuslanThis unit applies to individuals who have already achieved some initial Auslan skills and are now progressing towards the achievement of additional skills to converse as independent users of Auslan.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify the parameters of Auslan signs.
- 1.1. Identify different handshapes and changes that can change the meaning of a sign and sign examples.
- 1.2. Identify and use common sign locations in Auslan.
- 1.3. Identify and use primary and secondary sign movements in Auslan.
- 1.4. Identify how different orientations of handshapes can occur and sign examples.
- 1.5. Identify types of non-manual features that can be added to a sign and use when signing.
- 1.6. Identify and use signs with the same handshape, movement or location.
2. Identify how fluent signing can change the citation form of a sign.
- 2.1. Determine the difference between signs in their citation form and when they are being signed fluently.
- 2.2. Determine changes that can occur in fluent signing to the form of an Auslan sign.
3. Identify the use of space in Auslan.
- 3.1. Identify and compare different types of space used in AusIan.
- 3.2. Identify types of signs or signing used in space and use when signing.
- 3.3. Identify how signers set up referents in space and sign examples.
4. Identify verbs and their differences.
- 4.1. Categorise the three types of verbs used in Auslan to understand use when signing.
- 4.2. Determine the difference between plain verbs and indicating verbs and use when signing.
- 4.3. Distinguish and explain the difference between using signs that can be locatable or plain verbs.
- 4.4. Determine the difference between indicating and depicting verbs and sign examples.
5. Identify categories of depicting signs.
- 5.1. Explain the meaning of entity depicting signs and sign examples.
- 5.2. Explain the meaning of handling depicting signs and sign examples.
- 5.3. Explain the meaning of size, shape and specifiers and sign examples.
6. Identify how new signs are added to Auslan.
- 6.1. Identify and explain common ways new signs are added to Auslan.
