Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install commercial-grade carpet to multiple connecting rooms, large commercial areas and in multi-storey buildings. It does not include installing:underlay and grippers (which MSFFL3103 Install soft carpet underlay and grippers addresses) carpet using the direct-stick or dual-bond methods (which MSFFL3110 Install adhesive-fixed carpet addresses) carpet on complex stairs (which MSFFL3113 Install carpet on complex stairs addresses).Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions including plans and specifications and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install commercial carpet
- 1.1 Interpret carpet installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Gather the carpet and finishing, joining, fastening and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions
- 1.5 Confirm the subfloor, underlay and grippers are clean and suitable for installing the carpet, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
2. Cut, fit and fasten the commercial carpet
- 2.1 Determine the set out and laying direction of the carpet according to job instructions to minimise waste and joins, consider the direction of the pile, and ensure an efficient, quality installation
- 2.2 Establish the skirting point and seam placements for the carpet
- 2.3 Lay out the carpet pieces and check them for size, direction of pile and pattern match
- 2.4 Measure, mark, cut, seal and join the carpet pieces according to workplace procedures
- 2.5 Position, stretch and fasten the carpet according to the manufacturer instructions
- 2.6 Trim off excess carpet, install finishing strips, and finish installing the carpet to meet quality requirements
- 2.7 Check the carpet is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
