Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate industry-standard audio equipment for mixing music in the music, screen, media and entertainment industries. The unit applies to those who work in a studio environment and interpret artistic and technical production requirements for music to produce the final mix of a musical production.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to mix music in a studio
  • 1.1 Review production documentation and confirm production and mixing requirements with required personnel
  • 1.2 Agree on file format for production master and associated files with required personnel
  • 1.3 Set up audio equipment or digital workstation and software as required according to operational and production requirements
  • 1.4 Check all inputs and outputs for continuity and adjust as required
  • 1.5 Label all tracks and channel paths
  • 1.6 Complete audio check and document changes according to organisational requirements
  • 1.7 Discuss audio issues with required personnel and adjust as required
2. Mix music and audio sources
  • 2.1 Manage signal control and achieve a balanced sound mix
  • 2.2 Apply effects and adjustments according to production and mixing requirements
  • 2.3 Monitor signal and sound pressure levels and adjust to meet production requirements
  • 2.4 Identify and resolve problems according to production and mixing requirements
3. Finalise mix
  • 3.1 Undertake final mix and create a master according to production requirements
  • 3.2 Save and archive audio data according to organisational procedures
  • 3.3 Complete session documentation as required and distribute to required personnel according to organisational procedures
  • 3.4 Evaluate own performance and note areas for future improvement
