Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to represent policing in community crime prevention activities, including understanding local, current and emerging crime trends and issues, including challenges relating to demographics, particularly the young. This unit applies to those working as police liaison officers, operating within a policing environment.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously or under supervision with responsibility for their own functions and outputs. They would undertake complex tasks within established parameters and would develop solutions in predictable contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

1 Identify crime prevention opportunities
  • 1.1 Collect and interpret local intelligence and crime trends to enhance contextual knowledge
  • 1.2 Use local intelligence and crime trends to inform crime prevention activities and strategies

  • 1.4 Consult with local agencies and community groups to identify jurisdictional crime prevention opportunities
2 Participate in crime prevention activities
  • 2.1 Inform stakeholders of current prevention activities to provide awareness
  • 2.2 Contribute to organisational crime prevention strategies by drawing on knowledge of local area
  • 2.3 Communicate jurisdictional crime prevention policies and procedures to external community members
  • 2.4 Promote intended crime prevention outcomes through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • 2.5 Contribute to decision-making forums and working groups to establish and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders
  • 2.6 Engage in community events to promote crime prevention strategies
3 Build relationships with young people
  • 3.1 Identify potential challenges and opportunities to engage with young people
  • 3.2 Engage with young people to influence positive behaviour
  • 3.3 Identify strategies that could assist young people to improve their decision-making skills
  • 3.4 Evaluate the effectiveness of the engagement to inform future strategies and opportunities
4 Provide information and referrals to support services
  • 4.1 Identify resources available to support community crime prevention
  • 4.2 Direct community members to available and suitable referral and support services
  • 4.3 Support and encourage members of the public to access community services
