Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred care during anaesthesia, surgery and recovery in the perioperative nursing environment in operating theatres, post anaesthesia care units and day surgery centres.Enrolled nurses working in perioperative nursing hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice, and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Work in the multidisciplinary health care team in the perioperative environment.
  • 1.1. Work within enrolled nurse scope of practice to support nursing care team in managing care needs in the perioperative environment.
  • 1.2. Contribute to effective teamwork and positive group dynamics of the multidisciplinary health care team.
  • 1.3. Communicate professionally with members of the perioperative team.
  • 1.4. Apply philosophical framework for managing perioperative care in own nursing practice.
2. Contribute to preparation for surgical intervention.
  • 2.1. Provide delegated elements of person-centred care considering physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs.
  • 2.2. Apply contemporary perioperative clinical assessment tools and document physiological and psychological variables in assessment and report.
  • 2.3. Work in accordance with perioperative standards, guidelines and policies.
3. Perform clinical nursing actions in the perioperative environment.
  • 3.1. Analyse and problem solve to prioritise and adapt nursing interventions to reflect changes in condition.
  • 3.2. Perform nursing interventions to assist surgical team during surgical procedure.
  • 3.3. Identify actual and potential manual handling and environmental hazards and take action to reduce risk and promote safety.
  • 3.4. Check equipment relevant to practice requirements is operational and functionally fit for purpose, and take corrective action and report detected faulty equipment and environmental hazards.
  • 3.5. Apply principles of infection control in the perioperative environment in line with standards and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 3.6. Identify where the acuity of a person exceeds own knowledge, skill and assessed competence and refer to multidisciplinary health care team.
4. Promote improvement and advancement of perioperative nursing care.
  • 4.1. Evaluate nursing interventions and identified outcomes against evidence-based best practice in perioperative nursing.
  • 4.2. Seek opportunities and participate in professional development to guide own practice and act as a resource for colleagues.
