Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to style wigs and hairpieces for productions in the film, television and live entertainment industries.It applies to individuals who use a range of cutting, temporary colouring, setting and dressing methods to produce the required appearance of wigs and hairpieces for performers. They may work independently or as a member of a make-up and hair design team and are also responsible for the maintenance of wigs and hairpieces. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for styling wigs and hairpieces
  • 1.1 Confirm hairstyle design elements and production requirements and timelines with relevant personnel
  • 1.2 Select wigs and hairpieces for required hairstyles and according to performers’ measurements
  • 1.3 Check facilities and equipment meet health, hygiene and safety requirements
  • 1.4 Clean and condition wigs and hairpieces taking into account stitching, knotting and fibre type
2. Cut wigs and hairpieces
  • 2.1 Test performers’ skin for potential adverse reaction to wigs and hairpieces and take remedial action if required
  • 2.2 Apply hairpieces to scalp area and trim to blend with existing natural hair
  • 2.3 Apply wigs to performers and adjust to ensure a comfortable fit
  • 2.4 Apply hair cutting techniques to achieve the required wig appearance
  • 2.5 Cut switches and postiche as required to blend with required appearance
3. Apply design finishes to wigs and hairpieces
  • 3.1 Select styling aids, tools and techniques appropriate to required hairstyles
  • 3.2 Take into account the effect lighting has on hair colour and aspects of physical appearance when finishing wigs and hairpieces
  • 3.3 Use hairstyle design elements to produce hairstyles according to production requirements and within agreed timelines
  • 3.4 Confirm, with relevant personnel, that hair designs meet production requirements and adjust styles as required
  • 3.5 Attach wigs and hairpieces to performers’ heads or place on head blocks for fitting at a later time
  • 3.6 Document hair designs for future performances and continuity purposes
