1 Identify properties and characteristics of materials used
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 List all materials used on site
  • 1.5 Interpret safety data sheet (SDS) for each material
  • 1.6 Identify relevant manual handling issues
  • 1.7 Identify and define environmental hazards for each material
  • 1.8 Categorise materials into groups based on their hazards and determine appropriate hazard controls
2 Identify key factors effecting storage and handling
  • 2.1 Identify requirements for dangerous goods licence
  • 2.2 Identify environmental regulation requirements
  • 2.3 Identify usage patterns and frequencies
  • 2.4 Identify cost sensitivity to volume purchased
  • 2.5 Identify shelf life
3 Determine appropriate storage and handling protocols
  • 3.1 Check manufacturer’s storage and handling recommendations/requirements
  • 3.2 Check SDS and dangerous goods/Environment Protection Agency (EPA)/WHS requirements
  • 3.3 Check company usage requirements
  • 3.4 Resolve conflicts between different requirements
  • 3.5 Prepare storage and handling procedure for materials
4 Store and handle materials in accordance with protocols
  • 4.1 Identify and control hazards
  • 4.2 Use required handling aids
  • 4.3 Move and store materials in accordance with procedures
  • 4.4 Monitor storage and handling of materials and identify areas for improvement and take appropriate action, as required
  • 4.5 Complete any required documentation/reporting according to SOPs
