Elements and Performance Criteria

Vision system installation plans are developed in accordance with:
production and/or venue requirements and limitations
organisational policies and procedures
budget constraints
technical constraints
other resource constraints
production schedule
relevant legislative and organisational occupational health and safety requirements
local authority regulations

Appropriate personnel may include:
supervisors
head of departments
designers
directors
other specialist staff
clients
editors
graphic artists
photographers
sound engineers

Vision systems used will be determined by the equipment used within an organisation but may include:
projection equipment, including overhead projectors, 35mm slides, surtitles, film of any gauge, video projectors, data grade projectors
computers
televisions
monitors
video players
amplifiers and PA systems
speakers
communications systems (talkback)
show relay
cable or infra-red controllers
lighting control or computers
recording and playback devices for audio and images
video, digital and still cameras
connectors
computerised operating console
lighting fixtures
microphones (cabled and wireless)
two-way communication sets

Vision systems may be used in a range of environments, including:
live theatre, front or back of house
meeting and conference facilities
outdoor venues
festivals
events
shopping centres
hotels
clubs
attractions and theme parks
showgrounds

Accessories may include:
screens
truss
rostrum
curtaining
flats
masking
trolleys
stands
mounting brackets
chains and other rigging
other staging effects

Plans may be drawn for:
in-house venues
external venues hired by a client
single room/auditorium events
multiple room/auditoria events

Constraints may include:
venue may not be able to accommodate the types of equipment requested
cost of requested presentation style/equipment exceeds budget
presentation style requested may not suit the size of the venue

Underpinning knowledge and skills

Assessment must include evidence of the following knowledge and skills:

the capacities and limitations of different types of vision systems and elements used in vision systems
technical requirements and constraints of installing all types of vision systems
rigging requirements for vision systems
typical processes and procedures for the development of vision system plans
costing and budget issues associated with the design of vision system installation planning, including equipment and technician costs, ways to reduce costs, ways of presenting costs
processes and procedures typically used to ensure version control for draft and final plans
occupational health and safety issues to be considered for vision system installation
literacy skills sufficient to develop plans and communicate vision system design

It is strongly recommended that this unit be assessed with or after the following units:

CUEAUD06A Apply a general knowledge of vision systems to work activities
CUEAUD02B Prepare, rig, test and modify vision systems
CUEAUD03B Operate vision systems

Critical aspects of evidence

The following evidence is critical to the judgement of competence in this unit:

technical knowledge of the performance capacity of range of vision systems
effective interpretation of the brief and development of workable plans to meet the brief
effective communication with clients and other technical personnel

Method and context of assessment

The assessment context must provide for:

development of installation plans for more than one event or production
involvement of and interaction with others (client, production team) to reflect the collaborative nature of the planning process

Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess practical skills and the application of essential underpinning knowledge, and might include:

project or work activities to develop an installation plan for a particular production/event
project or role play activities which allow the candidate to demonstrate skills in interpreting briefs and presenting plans
written or oral questioning to test technical knowledge of typical vision systems
review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the job performance by the candidate
Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands and the needs of particular groups (eg people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).

Resource requirements

Assessment of this unit requires access to:

a brief and budget for vision system requirements
manual or computerised drawing materials
access to a venue or venue plans in order to develop a tailored installation plan
