Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to monitor trade waste approvals.It includes coordinating, implementing and reporting on monitoring programs for trade waste treatment and disposal in retail commercial and light industrial organisations. It also applies to the monitoring of complex trade waste systems in large organisations.This unit applies to those working with a specific responsibility for coordinating and conducting monitoring and testing of trade waste treatment and disposal. Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously, usually with supervisory responsibilities, while performing complex tasks in a range of contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for monitoring
- 1.1 Identity the appropriate sampling technique to collections
- 1.2 Identify the appropriate flow metering to trade waste
- 1.3 Determine the appropriate monitoring plan according to business type and risk
2 Implement monitoring and testing
- 2.1 Apply monitoring and testing programs and procedures for trade waste
- 2.2 Collect and monitor samples according to sample plan and workplace and safety procedures
- 2.3 Analyse testing results where appropriate and report to relevant personnel
- 2.4 Identify and investigate issues and inconsistencies and consult stakeholders
- 2.5 Report results of the investigation and make recommendations to relevant personnel according to workplace procedures
- 2.6 Select and use appropriate equipment for undertaking onsite monitoring
3 Monitor treatment and disposal
- 3.1 Monitor trade waste treatment and disposal
- 3.2 Identify and investigate breaches of trade waste discharge provisions and approvals
- 3.3 Report results and/or recommendations to relevant personnel
- 3.4 Complete, review and store trade waste management records for the work area
4 Monitor compliance of trade waste discharge
- 4.1 Monitor compliance of trade waste treatment and discharge by customers
- 4.2 Establish processes to identify and report non-compliance with trade waste approvals
- 4.3 Identify and apply enforcement measures to manage identified non-compliances according to relevant legislation and enforcement authorities
- 4.4 Plan and conduct safe onsite investigations to determine compliance by customer
- 4.5 Complete and prepare chain of custody documentation for samples according to workplace procedures
