This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to control operations in acid plant in Metalliferous mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in technician roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for control of acid plant operations
  • 1.1. Access, interpret and apply acid plant operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2. Communicate with other personnel by approved methods
  • 1.3. Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.4. Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the activity
  • 1.5. Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.6. Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.7. Ensure area is well ventilated before entry into work area
  • 1.8. Perform pre-start checks to ensure correct equipment operation
2. Manage acid plant operations
  • 2.1. Monitor performance of acid plant components regularly
  • 2.2. Regulate flow of substrate between process components to maximise production
  • 2.3. Regulate heat exchangers
  • 2.4. Handle acid plant products and reagents safely at all times
  • 2.5. Monitor and adjust volume of gas through acid plant
  • 2.6. Regulate gas impurity removal systems
  • 2.7. Regulate by-product disposal
  • 2.8. Monitor available acid plant storage capacity
  • 2.9. Complete all required written documentation for shift handover
  • 2.10. Pass on all shift information verbally or in writing to oncoming shift
3. Conduct housekeeping activities
  • 3.1. Review plant performance with oncoming shift
  • 3.2. Perform cleaning/housekeeping of plant and area and report associated hazards
