Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, set out, cut, lay and fasten carpet tiles, including tiles with geometric design features (such as custom designs).Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install carpet tiles
  • 1.1 Interpret carpet tile installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Gather the carpet tiles, adhesives, trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions, product labels and safety data sheets
  • 1.5 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the carpet tiles, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.6 For direct stick laying, apply a primer to the subfloor that suits the type of tiles being installed
2. Cut, fit and fasten carpet tiles
  • 2.1 Determine the set out and laying direction of the carpet tiles according to job instructions to minimise waste and joins, consider direction of the pile, patterns and design elements, and ensure an efficient, quality installation
  • 2.2 Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
  • 2.3 Apply adhesive to the subfloor according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Install the carpet tiles according to workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Measure, mark, cut and install carpet tiles as required
  • 2.6 Install finishing strips and finish installing the carpet tiles according to workplace procedures
  • 2.7 Check the carpet tiles are installed correctly according to manufacturer installation instructions, the relevant Australian standards and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 3.4 Complete task outcome documentation
