Description
This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist the dentist or dental specialist with patient care during medical emergencies in a dental setting.This unit applies to dental assistants and those carrying out dental assisting work.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for medical emergencies.
  • 1.1. Check expiry of medicaments used during medical emergencies.
  • 1.2. Check first aid supplies and operational status of equipment.
  • 1.3. Locate and have readily available onsite first aid kit.
2. Respond to a medical emergency.
  • 2.1. Recognise indicators that signify a medical emergency.
  • 2.2. Identify and minimise immediate risks to health and safety of self and others.
  • 2.3. Provide assistance as directed by the dental practitioner.
3. Assist with dental medical emergencies.
  • 3.1. Use appropriate procedure as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with low blood pressure.
  • 3.2. Use appropriate procedure as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with a cardiac emergency.
  • 3.3. Use appropriate procedure, medicaments and equipment as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with a diabetic emergency.
  • 3.4. Use appropriate procedure, medicaments and equipment as required to assist the dental practitioner to manage a patient with an allergy emergency.
4. Seek assistance from emergency response services.
  • 4.1. Recognise situations requiring a response from emergency services.
  • 4.2. Follow organisational policies and procedures to contact emergency response services.
  • 4.3. Provide emergency response services with accurate medical details regarding the medical emergency.
  • 4.4. Provide required details of the physical location of the patient including address and access requirements.
5. Assist with maintaining patient comfort.
  • 5.1. Assist with ensuring physical comfort of the patient.
  • 5.2. Provide verbal reassurance and support to the patient.
6. Record details of the emergency.
  • 6.1. Document incident details as directed by the dental practitioner according to organisational policies and procedures.
  • 6.2. Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • 6.3. Follow organisational policies and procedures when required to disclose patient information to others.
