Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to mix and apply thin-set terrazzo.  Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output. The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to mix and apply thin-set terrazzo
  • 1.1 Interpret terrazzo application requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check terrazzo mixing, installation and other required equipment and tools are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Gather the terrazzo materials and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are ready to use according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
2. Mix, apply and finish off thin-set terrazzo
  • 2.1 Establish a suitable mixing area and protect surrounding surfaces
  • 2.2 Check and confirm the substrate is free of cracks, flat, primed, clean and otherwise prepared and suitable for installing terrazzo
  • 2.3 Check the substrate’s moisture content is suitable for installing thin-set terrazzo according to manufacturer instructions
  • 2.4 Place floor divider strips for aesthetic purposes and for control and expansion joints, according to job instructions
  • 2.5 Mix the terrazzo base and other ingredients according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 2.6 Spread and trowel the terrazzo mix to the appropriate thickness, according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
  • 2.7 After the surface has cured, grind, grout, polish and seal the surface according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 3.4 Complete task outcome documentation
