Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare walls and install resilient sheet to dry and wet walls.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions including plans and specifications and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install resilient sheet
  • 1.1 Interpret resilient sheet installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Gather the resilient sheet, coatings, adhesives and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to use or install according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Confirm the wall substrate is clean and suitable for installing the resilient sheet, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
2. Prepare the walls
  • 2.1 Establish a mixing station in a safe, suitable location, and prepare the surface coating
  • 2.2 Trial the surface coating to check the equipment is operating correctly and the consistency of the coating material and the surface finish are according to the manufacturer instructions
  • 2.3 Apply surface coating to the required depth and coverage according to the manufacturer instructions and job requirements
  • 2.4 Check internal and external corners for square
  • 2.5 Check wall surfaces for plane, and smooth and clear them for further processing
3. Cut, fit and fasten resilient sheet
  • 3.1 Prepare feathering systems and applications and apply according to the manufacturer instructions and job instructions
  • 3.2 Determine the set out and laying direction of the resilient sheet according to job instructions to minimise waste and joins and considering the direction of seams, patterns, design elements and plumbing, to ensure an efficient, quality installation
  • 3.3 Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
  • 3.4 Cut and fasten any required pre-form fillet according to job instructions
  • 3.5 Measure, mark and cut the resilient sheet as required
  • 3.6 Apply adhesive to the wall according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 3.7 Position and fasten the resilient sheet according to workplace procedures
  • 3.8 Heat the resilient sheet to form profiles as required by job instructions
  • 3.9 Weld the resilient sheet’s seams and joins according to the manufacturer instructions
  • 3.10 Finish installing the resilient sheet and trim joins and seams
  • 3.11 Check the resilient sheet is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
4. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • 4.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 4.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 4.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance of equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 4.4 Complete task outcome documentation
