Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to scope and establish large scale and complex building design projects by consulting with clients and identifying project parameters, vision, budget and required personnel. It includes finalising the contract for the work. Large scale and complex projects involve any building classification and construction type, as defined in the National Construction Code (NCC), including Type A buildings.This unit is suitable for experienced building designers who apply broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge and highly specialised skills to manage building design projects with autonomy and judgement and to deal with sometimes complex and unpredictable contingencies.This unit forms part of the licensing requirements for people engaged in building design in some states and territories. 1 Establish client requirements.
  • 1.1 Consult client to determine business objectives, parameters and budget for building project.
  • 1.2 Negotiate with client to clarify designer role, level of service to be provided and deliverables.
  • 1.3 Determine agreed timelines for project completion.
  • 1.4 Communicate with client to advise constraints and potential risks to project progress.
  • 1.5 Finalise and document agreed formal project brief.
2 Assemble project team.
  • 2.1 Determine and document skills required to fulfil project brief within required timeframes.
  • 2.2 Identify internal and external personnel requirements for project.
  • 2.3 Determine roles of all project personnel.
  • 2.4 Integrate work of external personnel into overall project.
3 Finalise project requirements.
  • 3.1 Determine resources required to undertake project.
  • 3.2 Research business costs associated with completion of building design project.
  • 3.3 Prepare and document project budget.
  • 3.4 Determine work scheduling to meet contractual requirements.
  • 3.5 Establish risk mitigation strategies for project.
4 Negotiate and finalise costs and contracts.
  • 4.1 Seek legal and financial advice as required.
  • 4.2 Negotiate and finalise project budget with client.
  • 4.3 Negotiate and finalise contracts with relevant professionals.
