Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct waste assessments. It includes visually assessing waste at the site, reviewing documentation and discussing waste generation and management practices. It also includes identifying opportunities for waste minimisation and resource recovery.A person who achieves this unit of competency is expected to take responsibility for completing these tasks with a high degree of self-direction.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for waste assessment.
  • 1.1 Review job schedule to confirm requirements for waste assessment activities and clarify issues with relevant persons.
  • 1.2 Review workplace policies and procedures, legislation and regulations impacting waste assessment and apply to work tasks.
  • 1.3 Conduct risk assessment to manage risks associated with waste assessment according to work health and safety (WHS) requirements.
  • 1.4 Prepare documentation and resources required for waste assessment.
  • 1.5 Select, check and use personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities.
2 Assess waste.
  • 2.1 Inspect waste to assess composition of waste components.
  • 2.2 Record assessment findings according to workplace requirements.
3 Report waste assessment findings.
  • 3.1 Compile collected waste assessment evidence according to workplace requirements.
  • 3.2 Consult with relevant persons to identify opportunities for waste minimisation and resource recovery at assessment site.
  • 3.3 Complete assessment documentation according to workplace requirements.
