Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to implement property improvement, construction and repair where the services of a tradesperson are not necessary.The unit applies to individuals who implement property improvement, construction and repair under broad direction, and take responsibility for their own work.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, health and safety in the workplace requirements, legislative and regulatory requirements.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Assess property condition
- 1.1 Confirm work plan and priorities with supervisor
- 1.2 Assess property structures for soundness
- 1.3 Identify and determine property improvements and maintenance requirements
- 1.4 Confirm with supervisor that planning and permissions have been obtained where required
2. Prepare tools, equipment and material
- 2.1 Select and check quantity and quality of materials for the task
- 2.2 Select tools and equipment required for the task, and check for safe operation
- 2.3 Identify faulty or unsafe tools and equipment, and separate for repair or replacement
- 2.4 Identify potential hazards and risks, and implement safe working practices to manage risks
- 2.5 Select, fit, use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the task
3. Carry out property improvements
- 3.1 Construct, repair or dismantle property structures
- 3.2 Carry out basic concrete, masonry, metal or timber repairs
- 3.3 Carry out maintenance to property surrounds
- 3.4 Comply with planning or building requirements or restrictions
4. Complete maintenance and improvement activities
- 4.1 Monitor, maintain and improve property structures and surrounds
- 4.2 Clean and tidy work area, and dispose of or recycle rubbish and waste material
- 4.3 Clean and store tools, re-usable materials, equipment and PPE according to workplace procedures
- 4.4 Complete records according to workplace procedures
