Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to represent policing in community engagement activities, including developing networks and encouraging community participation. This unit applies to those working as police liaison officers, operating within a policing environment. The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously or under supervision with responsibility for their own functions and outputs. They would undertake complex tasks within established parameters and would develop solutions in predictable contexts. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

1 Present to community groups
  • 1.1 Seek approval from supervisors to present to community groups as a representative of the organisation
  • 1.2 Collect information to facilitate community presentation
  • 1.3 Develop presentation using available resources
  • 1.4 Deliver presentation to community groups using appropriate language
  • 1.5 Seek feedback from internal stakeholders on presentation for continuous improvement purposes
2 Represent the police in the community
  • 2.1 Respond to community requests for information or participation
  • 2.2 Explain and promote police activities to encourage community recognition and support
  • 2.3 Refer non-routine requests for information through established and approved organisational channels
3 Participate in community discussions and formal meetings
  • 3.1 Provide information to the community to assist in discussions and outcomes
  • 3.2 Seek input from community members to encourage participation and progress outcomes
  • 3.3 Determine a communication strategy through identification of meeting procedures, cultural protocols and community context
